From Waste to Wonder: The EcoFlowers Story

Back to Blog

It started with a simple observation: Rwanda's landscapes are beautiful, but they're increasingly marred by plastic waste. In 2020, a small group of artisans in Muhanga District decided to do something about it.

The idea was straightforward — turn waste into something beautiful. But the execution required creativity, patience, and skill. Those first eco-flowers were imperfect, but they carried a powerful message: waste doesn't have to be ugly.

Word spread quickly. Neighbors wanted to buy these unique flowers. Hotels asked about bulk orders. The small workshop couldn't keep up with demand, so the team began training new artisans from the local community.

By 2022, EcoFlowers had received national recognition, winning the Rwanda Green Innovation Award for sustainable design. This validation brought new opportunities — partnerships with hotels, businesses, and even international buyers.

Today, EcoFlowers employs over 50 artisans, has transformed more than 10,000 kg of waste, and continues to grow. But the mission remains the same: to prove that beauty and sustainability can coexist, and that every piece of waste has the potential to become something wonderful.
